B4 - Sedimentary Architecture of the Umbria-Marche Apennines (UMA) | Post meeting Trips | IAS 2019 Rome
The K/Pg boundary at Bottaccione Gorge (Gubbio area)

The UMA are part of the peri-Mediterranean system of Alpine-Apennines chains formed after the Africa and Europe plate collision. The UMA record the evolution of the Tethys Ocean starting from the early Mesozoic. The proposed geological itinerary connects some impressive outcrops spanning from shallow-to deep marine successions developed on a passive margin. The field trip will focus on sedimentary facies architecture and evolution of the depositional systems visiting three key sites: 1) the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian-Pliensbachian) cyclothemic facies of the shallow-water carbonate platform (Calcare Massiccio Fm, in the Frasassi area); 2) the lower Toarcian organic rich marly facies (T-OAE) (Marne del Monte Serrone Fm, in the type section); 3) the deep-marine facies bracketing the K/Pg boundary in the well-known and famous section of the Bottaccione Gorge (Gubbio).

Technical Information

The excursion will take place at low altitude (< 1000 meters). Most of the outcrops are along the road. All participants require comfortable walking boots. A waterproof coat/jacket could be useful. In September the weather is relatively stable although changes with rain are possible. Accommodation is planned in local country hotels (agriturismo), in double rooms. Please, inform in due time the organizers for special dietary requirements (such as allergies, food intolerances…). The organization will provide the bus transfer from Rome (the meeting point will be communicated at the Meeting) to the field trip area, and the bus transfer to Rome at the end of the field trip. For any alternative solution, the participants must provide by themselves.

More info will be available before and at the Meeting.
