Overview of the Castellammare Gulf and the excursion area

The field trip will provide an overview of the carbonate sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Mesozoic of western Sicily.
In particular, the excursion will focus on:
– A transect across a Norian-Rhaetian rimmed carbonate platform;
– The Triassic / Jurassic boundary in peritidal facies;
– The demise of the Lower Jurassic carbonate platforms and the Rosso Ammonitico sedimentation;
– Mass Transport Deposits in a tectonically-controlled Cretaceous escarpment.

Itinerary

Palermo-Trapani-Palermo. Transportation by bus or minibus (depending on the number of participants).

Technical Information

The excursion will start on day 14 from Palermo airport at 11.00 a.m. and will end on day 16 at 17.00 to the Palermo airport. For participants who intend to stop in Palermo for the night of the 16th, there will be a stop at 6.00 pm in the city center (Piazza Politeama).
The fieldtrip is planned as short walks for reaching outcrops. Long trousers, t-shirt, sunscreen, hat, boots are recommended. Expected weather conditions: sunny with temperatures of 25-30 degrees.
